I’m an undeniably terrible cook, which means that no one is making their way to my home for an exquisite dining experience. (It’s all about my sparkling charm!!) However, there is one thing I always have ready that universally pleases a crowd…

My kitchen is filled with loose leaf lemon verbena tea. In my opinion, it’s the ideal after-dinner beverage, but more importantly, it’s a simple way to keep guests lingering a bit longer when I want the evening to continue.

A friend of mine always keeps cold cans of seltzer chilled in the fridge; another friend shares these upscale sodas. The first often prepares meals, while the latter usually orders us Ethiopian takeout. Unsurprisingly, I adore visiting both of them. My dad lays out Boursin cheese paired with pretzel crisps from Costco, which make for a fantastic combination.

Lily Sullivan, the creator of Love and Other Rugs, has mastered what she terms A Big Spread. This allows her to complete all the preparations before guests arrive, enjoy her own gathering without stressing over something baking, and simply restock items as necessary. “I’ve drawn inspiration from dishes at restaurants I cherish, like a tower of potato chips with prosciutto from Ernesto’s or a fennel and olive dish from Altro Paradiso,” she shared. “I aim to evoke a sense of abundance.”

Jenny Rosenstrach (who is well-known) enjoys what she calls the Store-Bought Starter Plate. Since she has a passion for cooking, she tries to ensure that guests don’t fill up before the main course. “I prefer to serve snacks that ‘awaken the palate,’” she mentioned to me. “Salty potato chips (Cape Cod Kettle Cooked), vibrant gherkins (Trader Joe’s), and spicy pistachios (Wonderful brand) are my trifecta.”

Following that, her menu includes one of two recipes. Jenny explains: “When I invite someone over for dinner, my mind instantly wanders to our house specialties, both of which are pasta dishes: Diane Kochilas’s Pasta with Yogurt and Caramelized Onions and my Pappardelle with Pork Ragu (which was dubbed a ‘genius recipe’ on Food52, partly because of how incredibly easy it is to whip up). I can’t even count how many times I’ve made those, and the fantastic part is, I never grow tired of either.”

While discussing favorite snacks with Joanna, she suggested I speak with Leah Wiseman Fink, who serves chips and onion dip all year round.

Intrigued, I inquired with Leah about how she came up with the idea. “During my college years in Ann Arbor, I loved the atmosphere of strolling down the street, spotting friends on their porches, and lingering for a while,” she explained. “Chips and dip were an effortless snack that my roommates and I could have ready for guests. I’ve been serving it ever since.” She prefers North Fork or Ruffles for chips and Lipton for the dip.

“What I cherish most about being the go-to house for chips and dip is that it signifies an open door policy. You don’t need an invitation or a special occasion; you’re always welcome, and I’ll make sure you’re fed.” Isn’t that just perfect?
