The Music and Drama Club is a 501(c)(3) organization in the Cleveland area that encourages interest in and appreciation of the art forms of music and drama, while also providing scholarships and assistance in these areas to organizations and schools in the Cleveland region.
In 1904, three women enjoying lunch contemplated the possibility of starting a “study club.” A few months later, Mrs. Minette Stahl (a soprano) and Mrs. Margaret Taylor Spitz (known as a Reader during that era) convened with five friends who shared their vision to establish The Music and Drama Study Club. The Club’s original seven members began gathering bi-weekly in one another’s homes to present programs centered on the lives of early composers. By 1911, the membership had
expanded to 40, split evenly between active members, who had the responsibility to entertain the Club, and associate members, who acted as hostesses for the formal afternoon teas held after each performance.
In 1917, as the United States entered into conflict with Germany, Stahl and Spitz restructured the meetings to serve as benefits for the Red Cross. Throughout The Great Depression, Club President Mrs. W.R. Jeavons utilized her home for meetings to ensure the Club’s continuity. When the country joined WWII, the Club President, Mrs. Dieter, redirected the Club’s focus towards raising funds for the Red Cross.
Despite the Club’s longstanding commitment to charitable contributions, the first official Music and Drama Scholarship was not given until 1936. That initial $50 donation to The Cleveland Music School Settlement has since evolved into the current scholarship program. Starting in 1941,
members primarily gathered scholarship funds through the collection and redemption of Ohio Sales Tax Stamps. In 1960, the Club recognized the necessity to establish a capital fund that could eventually generate sufficient interest income to support the scholarship program. The annual Holiday Scholarship luncheon has now become the pinnacle of each Music and Drama season and a significant source of scholarship funds. In 2024, as it commemorates its 120th year, the Club continues its legacy of fostering artistic appreciation and nurturing young talent, eagerly anticipating the next 120 years of enhancing Cleveland’s cultural scene. In 2024, the Club was admitted into the 100 Year Club of the Western Reserve, which honors organizations that have been in continuous operation for at least a century.
Currently, its annual events feature teas, luncheons, and the Holiday Scholarship Luncheon. Scholarships remain a fundamental component of the Club’s mission. These events facilitate networking among members and performers, as well as showcasing professional performances.
