In 2025, I’ve enjoyed numerous coffee encounters, some familiar and others fresh, and often find myself wishing, or perhaps hoping, for one of my favorite spots to launch in my city. My hopes were fulfilled when I came across an announcement in Coffee News that Watchhouse, London’s leading specialty coffee brand, would be opening in Dubai. To my delight, it wasn’t one of those lengthy announcements promising a launch in two years, but instead, it was happening in just a few weeks, which turned out to be true in November 2025. Hooray!
Nestled in an upscale pop-up area known as Marsa Boulevard, operational from 4pm to 12am, adjacent to Dubai Festival City Mall, Watchhouse joins a host of local coffee and pastry shops alongside a select few international brands.
You’ll be pleased to hear that I visited twice within just four days.
During my initial visit, it was no surprise to encounter a long line, as many Emiratis likely recognize this brand from central London.
I patiently queued with my daughter, and since it was the evening, I ordered a batch brew. The café was bustling, leaving limited seating, but we managed to snag two spots in front of their brewing station, outfitted with numerous V60 brewers.
Later, a barista informed me that they pre-dose and pack their filter coffees, store them in a freezer, and brew them upon receiving an order. While we waited for my coffee, I spotted an AeroPress championship trophy and inquired, “Who won this?” I had served as a judge at the UAE AeroPress Championship just two days before and was introduced to the individual who came in third place.
He graciously invited us to choose any coffee we liked on the house, and my daughter opted for matcha… (I was thinking coffee… but trends and GenZ… sigh). Regardless, I chose a flat white to sample their milk-based offerings.
I’m unsure what they used, but it genuinely became one of my top flat whites of the year… why? Well, upon asking the manager, he revealed it was the milk they utilized, and that clicked with me, as their espresso blend, 1829 Espresso, is identical to what they serve in London.
The batch brew was delightful as well, hinting at dark fruit flavors, though I later realized I received the Ethiopian instead of the El Salvador variety (if I recall correctly) that I had ordered.
A few days later, I met a friend for lunch at the same mall, and upon finishing, I noticed it was 3:30pm…. just 30 minutes until Watchhouse opened. I wandered around and arrived precisely at 4pm…. I was their first customer. I took a stroll and snapped a few photos. Tempted to indulge in a slice of cake… who wouldn’t be?
However, a staff member suggested that a chocolate tart (last pic) was the perfect match for my flat white, so I gave in. My flat white was expertly poured by one of their leading baristas, who hailed from Cameroon. (Oops, I forgot his name).
I met the head barista from Zimbabwe, who enlightened me on their philosophy, and I mentioned my long-standing familiarity with the brand, as it has been my go-to in London.
Yet another delightful experience.
I eagerly anticipate returning and sharing one of these moments with my wife….
