Three Coffee Shops You Absolutely Must Visit During a Layover in London

Always in search of novel coffee experiences during my visits to London, I stumbled upon two new spots and am excited to share one of my favorites with you.

2 Love Coffeehouse, 89 St John’s Rd, London SW11 1QY

Situated at the junction of St Johns Road and Battersea Rise and a mere 5-6 minute stroll from the bustling Clapham Junction railway station is 2 Love Tea and Coffee – although their coffee selections take center stage on the menu. I’ve actually returned a few times, as if I can make a quick escape from home before the day’s plans are set, I can delight in a fantastic flat white. Upon entering, an enticing display of cakes greets you on your left, enticing to all except those indifferent to sweets. Admittedly, I’ve turned down these treats a few times but have also given in to their red velvet and carrot cake on others.

I often pop in for a quality flat white and frequently take home coffee for my travels back to Dubai.

They offer their exclusive blends for espresso drinks but also provide Monmouth coffees and other local London roasters.

The Coffee Guild, 106 Walton Street, Oxford OX2 6AJ

During my son’s master’s graduation day, after a long stretch without any specialty coffee, I was thrilled to find this café on our way to the celebratory dinner across the street. As everyone headed into the restaurant, I had to pause for a moment after spotting the La Marzocco Linea espresso machine – I probably sound like a caffeine addict… Nevertheless, it was worth it; a double espresso was just what I needed to carry on through the day.

After dinner, my brother couldn’t resist ordering a latte while I picked up a bag of their espresso blend.

Two standout aspects truly impressed me at this coffee shop.

Firstly, when did you last come across a coffee shop in England that stays open past 6pm? The only one I could think of was Watch House in Bloomsbury, London. Curiously, I asked the owner, who mentioned they remain open until 11pm… yes, you heard correctly. I am quite certain that no other coffee shop in England operates this late.

Secondly, both the owner and the staff were so warm that I was tempted to crown them “the happiest coffee shop in England”. The passion they displayed while serving coffee and sharing that they were open until 11pm was incredibly delightful.

Definitely worth a visit.

Treelogy Coffee, 50 Eastbourne Terrace, Paddington, London W2 6LG

I must admit when a London friend proposed we meet here for coffee and a chat, I felt a bit doubtful – likely due to the name. I almost suggested a different venue but knowing our time was limited, I opted to check them out instead.

Indeed, I came across images of latte art, yet I wanted further insight. So, I arrived a bit earlier than our meeting to scope the place out. Unlike most London coffee shops, aside from the sophisticated Watch House, which feel quite neighborly, this establishment appeared rather corporate as it was situated at the base of a relatively new office building adjacent to the recently remodeled Paddington railway station. After observing the barista and checking their coffee menu, I decided to go for a cortado.

It was delightful, and maybe I shouldn’t judge a coffee shop by its flooring…. Ha!.
