Visiting the beach is a dream, no doubt — we particularly love Rockaway Beach in Queens — but for a while, it also seemed complicated. Does anybody else feel this way? Toby would become restless, I would get warm, and Anton… well, Anton would enjoy it, but we both would be so warm and restless!
Then I received a tip that transformed everything…
Bring a proper shovel. Not a lightweight toy one, but a solid heavy-duty one. A mom of five, who once sat beside me at the beach, shared this advice, and I looked up and witnessed it in action: her children played contentedly the entire time while she supervised them and read her book. It felt like unlocking a puzzle. From then on, we began bringing a good shovel each time, and the boys would spend hours creating castles (with moats!), or digging small holes to watch the waves fill them up, or numerous other entertaining activities; and other kids would wander over to join them, and I, too, would watch them and read my book.
Other beach toys we’ve enjoyed include Uno, frisbees, and nets, but nothing surpasses a sturdy shovel!
Relaxing after a productive dig.

**Top Strategy for Enjoying the Beach**
A day at the beach offers a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, providing relaxation, fun, and a chance to connect with nature. To maximize your enjoyment, planning and preparation are key. Here’s a comprehensive strategy to ensure you have an unforgettable beach experience.
**1. Choose the Right Beach**
Research and pick a beach that fits your preferences. Consider crowd size, available amenities, water conditions, and activities offered. Some beaches cater to families, while others are ideal for surfers or those seeking solitude.
**2. Check the Weather and Tides**
Before heading out, look at the weather forecast and tide schedules. This will help you pack suitable items and plan your activities. Avoid extreme weather conditions and be cautious of high tides that can reduce beach space.
**3. Pack Smart**
Bring essentials like sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and beach towels. A beach umbrella or tent can offer shade and comfort. Don’t forget snacks, water, and a cooler for cold drinks. Consider a first-aid kit for minor injuries.
**4. Dress Appropriately**
Wear comfortable swimwear and have a change of clothes. Flip-flops or water shoes are perfect for hot sand or rocky areas. Lightweight, breathable clothing keeps you cool.
**5. Plan Activities**
Decide on activities like swimming, beach volleyball, or paddleboarding. Bring necessary equipment like snorkels, frisbees, or a kite. For relaxation, consider a good book or a playlist of favorite tunes.
**6. Stay Safe**
Always swim in designated areas and heed lifeguard warnings. Be aware of rip currents and know how to escape them. Watch over children and ensure they have flotation devices if needed.
**7. Respect the Environment**
Follow Leave No Trace principles by cleaning up after yourself and disposing of trash properly. Avoid disturbing wildlife and respect protected areas. Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect marine life.
**8. Capture the Moment**
Bring a camera or smartphone for memories. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best lighting for photos. A waterproof camera is great for underwater shots.
**9. Relax and Unwind**
Take time to enjoy the surroundings. Listen to the waves, feel the sand between your toes, and breathe in the salty air. Mindfulness can enhance your beach trip and provide peace.
**10. Stay Hydrated and Nourished**
Drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Pack a picnic with healthy snacks like fruits, nuts, and sandwiches to maintain energy levels.
By following these strategies, you can have a beach day that is both enjoyable and refreshing. Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, a well-planned beach day can offer the perfect escape.
