In 2025, I’ve encountered numerous coffee experiences, both familiar and novel, and I often find myself hoping—perhaps even praying—that one of my favorites would open in my city. My wishes were fulfilled when I came across an article in Coffee News stating that Watchhouse, the leading specialty coffee chain from London, was set to open in Dubai. To add to the excitement, it wasn’t a long-term announcement—rather, it would happen in a matter of weeks, and indeed, it opened in November 2025. Hooray!
Situated in a trendy pop-up area known as Marsa Boulevard, which operates from 4pm to 12pm and lies adjacent to Dubai Festival City Mall, Watchhouse is surrounded by various local coffee and dessert brands, along with a handful of international names.
You’ll be pleased to hear that I visited twice within just four days.
During my first visit, I was not taken aback by the lengthy queue, as I suspect many Emiratis waiting were well-acquainted with this brand from central London.
I queued patiently with my daughter, and given that it was evening, I opted for a batch brew. The place was quite packed, leaving limited seating, but we managed to find two spots in front of their brew bar, which was adorned with numerous V60 brewers.
Later, one of the baristas informed me that they pre-dose and pack their filter coffees, storing them in a freezer until an order is made. While waiting for my coffee, I spotted an AeroPress championship trophy and inquired, “Who won this?” since I had recently judged the UAE AeroPress championship and was introduced to the individual who took third place.
He generously offered us any coffee of our choice on the house, and my daughter opted for matcha… (I was thinking coffee… but you know how trends and Gen Z are… sigh). I decided on a flat white, aiming to taste their milk-based drinks.
I don’t know what their secret was, but it was undoubtedly one of the best flat whites I had this year… why? I asked the manager, who mentioned the milk they used. That seemed to be the game-changer, as their espresso blend, 1829 Espresso, is the same as what they serve in London.
The batch brew was delightful too, with notes of dark fruit, but I later realized they served me the Ethiopian instead of the El Salvador (I think) variety I had ordered.
A few days later, I met a friend for lunch at the same mall, and when we finished, I noticed it was 3:30pm… just half an hour before Watchhouse opened. So, I wandered around and arrived right at 4pm… I was the first customer. I roamed about and snapped a few pictures. I was tempted to indulge in a slice of cake… who could resist that?
However, one of the staff suggested that a chocolate tart (last pic) would pair perfectly with my flat white, so I caved in. My flat white was expertly crafted by one of their chief baristas, who hails from Cameroon. (Oops, I forgot his name).
I also met the head barista from Zimbabwe, who shared their philosophy with me. I mentioned my long-standing familiarity with the brand as my go-to in London.
Another delightful experience.
