From London to Dubai.
We’ve encountered a few establishments like this in Dubai, whether they are a high-end restaurant, a bakery, or a shop; however, when it pertains to specialty coffee, it’s quite uncommon. In fact, one of my favorite specialty coffee cafes from London is set to open in Dubai this week or next – more on that after I pay a visit, God willing.
Now, let’s talk about Half Cup, Dubai.
I had no prior knowledge of this cafe, but when our daughter recommended we go there to celebrate my wife’s birthday with brunch, I looked into it and their coffee, and off we went.
It’s located in a newly developed residential area in Business Bay, surrounded by stylish apartment buildings named Peninsula 1, 2, 3, etc., so as you approach, you could be anywhere in the world, with a view of the nearby canal. Half Cup itself is sleek and modern, resembling a glass box filled with abundant sunlight and some outdoor seating for when it cools down – yes, it does cool down in Dubai, from early November until late March.
Although the indoor seating is limited, we managed to grab a spot as we walked in. We were served by Chris, probably my waiter of the year, who was exceptionally attentive and accommodating. I think our first mistake was not heeding his advice on portion sizes. Whoa!
I’m not sure if you can gauge the size of our order of Turkish Eggs with beef brisket, but the BBQ Beef Brisket Brioche sandwich could easily feed three.
Whoa!!!!
If you decide to visit and order eggs royale, be warned that it’s also a sufficient portion for two, as I noticed at the next table.
So, what about the coffee?
Prominently displayed on a striking steel brewing bar was their two-group La Marzocco Linea espresso machine paired with two Victoria Arduino grinders. They provide a selection of coffees for both filter and espresso, roasted locally by one of my preferred Dubai-based roasteries, so I felt confident in their offerings. I opted for a flat white using Brazilian beans.
Delicious with notes of nuts and milk chocolate. It was fortunate that I ordered this prior to my meal, as I usually do when having eggs cooked in a tomato sauce, such as the Turkish eggs. Otherwise, finishing my coffee might have been a challenge.
I highly recommend it, and did I mention they have a dinner menu as well?
I’m already looking forward to my next visit because whenever I find good food and coffee, you can bet I will be planning my next trip there soon.
You can find them at Peninsula 5, Business Bay, Dubai.
