In 2025, I’ve encountered numerous coffee moments, both familiar and newfound, and frequently I ponder, even pray, that one of my favorite spots would launch in my city. My hopes were fulfilled when I discovered in Coffee News that Watchhouse, a top-tier specialty coffee chain from London, was set to open in Dubai. Remarkably, this was not a distant announcement but a near reality happening just weeks later, in November 2025. Hooray!
Nestled in a trendy pop-up area known as Marsa Boulevard, open from 4pm to 12am, adjacent to Dubai Festival City Mall, Watchhouse is joined by several local coffee and dessert establishments, with only a few global brands present.
I’m pleased to share that I visited twice within just four days.
During my initial visit, I wasn’t taken aback by the long queue; many Emiratis in line are likely acquainted with this brand from central London.
I waited patiently with my daughter, and since it was evening, I opted for a batch brew. The place was quite crowded, leaving limited seating, but we managed to snag two spots at the brew bar, outfitted with numerous V60 brewers.
Later, a barista informed me that they pre-dose and freeze their filter coffees, then simply brew them upon order. As we settled in, waiting for my coffee, I spotted an AeroPress championship trophy and inquired, “who was the winner?” since I had judged the UAE AeroPress championship just two days prior and met the individual who came in third.
Generously, he offered us any coffee we desired on the house, and my daughter chose matcha… (I was leaning towards coffee… but trends and Gen Z… sigh). In any event, I decided on a flat white to try their milk-based offerings.
I have no idea what they added to it, but it was undoubtedly one of my favorite flat whites of the year… why? I asked the manager, who mentioned the milk they used, and I realized that must be the key, as their espresso blend, 1829 Espresso, is the same as the one served in London.
The batch brew was enjoyable too, with dark fruit notes; however, I discovered that he had given me the Ethiopian instead of the El Salvador (if I recall correctly) that I had ordered.
A few days later, I met a friend for lunch at the same mall and after finishing, I realized it was 3:30pm… just 30 minutes until Watchhouse opened. So, I wandered around and arrived promptly at 4pm… I was their first customer. I wandered about, snapping a few photos. I was tempted to indulge in a cake slice… who wouldn’t be?
However, one of the staff recommended a chocolate tart (last picture), saying it would pair perfectly with my flat white, so I gave in. My flat white was expertly poured by one of their lead baristas from Cameroon. (oops, forgot the name).
I also met the head barista from Zimbabwe, who enlightened me about their philosophy, and I mentioned my long familiarity with the brand, as it has always been my go-to in London.
Another delightful experience.
I eagerly anticipate returning to try one of these with my wife…
