Possibly the only thing I appreciate more than plaid is tartan plaid. There’s just an undeniable charm in its classic Christmas hues that has me enamored during the festive season. Enamored like a girl at a Harry Styles concert. Or a girl eyeing a box of doughnuts–both experiences I have had.
I’m collaborating with some exceptionally talented blogging friends this week to showcase our festive rooms. Don’t take my word for it? Check out this amazing lineup! If you’ve stopped by from Shand at Quarters One, welcome! I’m thrilled to have you here!
Tartan Plaid Bedroom
I don’t usually do much decorating in our bedrooms now that my kids have grown (read: they aren’t interested anymore), so it was an ideal chance to freshen up my son’s room/guestroom. Another thing I seldom do? Decorate with red! THIS was a fun twist.
I have come to understand that I enjoy decorating, but I’m not particularly fond of the prop styling that often accompanies modern blogging. I made a promise to myself to utilize what I already have and avoid fake aesthetics. Does that resonate?
I didn’t adjust the pillows AT ALL until my dog made a sudden leap into them during the photoshoot. He was promptly escorted out as I pulled dog hair from the navy blanket. Oh dear.
Speaking of pillows! Va-va-voom!! Am I right? They steal the show. Even better, I discovered the tartan pillows on Amazon, and they were incredibly affordable! I saved so much cash! But then I ended up purchasing more since they were so reasonably priced. So I didn’t save quite as much after all! Oops.
I simply adore the aesthetic of a daybed adorned with a bunch of slightly messy pillows. There’s something about it that whispers, “Come lie down. Don’t worry about anything. It’s all good. I mean it.” It’s a very inviting daybed.
Want me to be fully transparent (oxymoron, right, Chris)? When my son left for Europe, I stripped his room bare and pulled out the carpet. I haven’t replaced it yet. The photo below shows the subfloor beneath the bed! I believe it’s high time bloggers reveal the less glamorous truths, don’t you think? Just me? 🙂
Whatever. It is what it is. But it does make me chuckle (and weep) at how misleading photos can be.
<p:I know you’re seeing a lot of pictures, but this one is truly a favorite of mine. Tartan plaid has captured my heart eternally. And so has Harry Styles. And Harry Styles IN tartan plaid.

**Enhancing Your Bedroom with a Tartan Plaid Theme**
Tartan plaid, with its rich tradition and enduring charm, can infuse a remarkable mix of classic and modern styles into your bedroom decor. Stemming from Scottish heritage, tartan patterns feature interwoven horizontal and vertical stripes in various colors. Integrating this age-old design into your bedroom can cultivate a warm, welcoming, and refined environment. Here’s how to effectively incorporate tartan plaid to turn your bedroom into a cozy escape.
**1. Selecting the Ideal Tartan Plaid**
The first step to decorating with tartan plaid is to choose the right design and color palette that harmonizes with your bedroom’s existing decor. Tartan comes in an array of color combinations, ranging from traditional reds and greens to contemporary blues and grays. Think about the vibe you want to create: warm shades like red and orange can build a cozy and inviting atmosphere, while cooler shades such as blue and green can foster a sense of tranquility and relaxation.
**2. Bedding and Textiles**
A straightforward method to bring tartan plaid into your bedroom is through textiles. A tartan plaid duvet cover or comforter can act as the room’s centerpiece. Pair it with solid-colored sheets and pillowcases to counterbalance the bold design. Adding throw blankets and decorative pillows in matching tartan patterns or solid hues can introduce layers of texture and warmth to your bed.
**3. Curtains and Rugs**
Extend the tartan theme beyond the bed by incorporating it into your curtains and rugs. Tartan plaid curtains can beautifully frame your windows, adding a touch of sophistication and consistency to the room. A tartan area rug can ground the space, providing a comforting surface beneath your feet while tying together the room’s color palette.
**4. Accent Furniture and Decor**
For a more subtle touch, consider using tartan plaid in accent furniture and decor items. Think about a tartan-upholstered chair or ottoman to deliver a splash of pattern without overwhelming the area. Decorative aspects like tartan lampshades, picture frames, or even a plaid-covered headboard can introduce the theme in a more understated way.
**5. Wall Treatments**
If you’re feeling daring, think about incorporating tartan plaid into your wall treatments. This can be done through wallpaper or a painted accent wall. For a more temporary option, consider hanging a large tartan tapestry or fabric panel as a focal feature.
**6. Balancing the Aesthetic**
While tartan plaid is a striking design, it’s crucial to balance it with neutral elements to prevent a cluttered appearance. Incorporate solid colors and simple textures to create a cohesive and visually pleasing environment. Wooden furnishings, natural textiles, and metal accents can complement the tartan pattern and enhance the overall design.
**7. Seasonal Adjustments**
Tartan plaid is especially popular in the fall and winter due to its warm and snug nature. Nevertheless, it can be adapted for year-round use by choosing lighter color palettes for spring and summer. Swap out heavier tartan fabrics for lighter options and introduce fresh, seasonal decorations to maintain an updated feel in the room.
**Conclusion**
Decorating your bedroom with a tartan plaid theme can imbue the space with character and allure. By thoughtfully selecting patterns, colors, and complementary features, you can fashion a bedroom that is both chic and comfortable. Whether you opt for a bold tartan theme or prefer subtle accents, tartan plaid provides a versatile and timeless choice for bedroom decor.
