At the beginning of summer, my grandmother sent a message in our family group chat:
“SAVE THE DATE: June 14th. Tía Marta’s 85th birthday bash at my house.”
Flash forward to the party day. My husband Max and I enter my grandma’s home, carrying diaper bags and holding our children’s hands. As I sink into a couch and see my tía Mimi hurriedly inflating balloons, it hits me, This is no ordinary birthday event, it’s a surprise party.
My tía Marta joined our clan nearly four decades ago. She met my great tío Cris, my grandmother’s eldest sibling, on a blind date while he was in Chicago visiting his brother. “I didn’t expect anything to come of our date,” says Marta. “He returned to California, while I stayed in Chicago, thinking we’d never speak again.”
Unexpectedly, Cris kept in touch by calling her up for an entire year after their first meeting. “Our talks were often short because he’d call at night, just before my friends and I hit the clubs,” says Marta. “When I realized his seriousness, I thought, well, perhaps it’s destiny.”

Post his passing, my grandmother and tía Esther frequently checked in on Marta, inviting her to all family events, visiting her frequently, and helping her adapt to widowhood. As her 85th birthday approached, they aimed to host a party that would make her feel cherished.
Initially, they decorated my grandmother’s house with colorful paper fans and balloon arches. They ordered almond cupcakes and German chocolate cake from Peters’ Bakery in San Jose.
