From India with Affection. Not a title for an upcoming film, but the debut of a leading specialty coffee shop brand from India in Dubai, which opened its doors towards the end of 2025, enhancing the already thrilling specialty coffee landscape in Dubai. I had previously encountered Subko, as I first met its founder, Rahul Reddy, at the 2023 World of Coffee event in Dubai. During our initial introduction, he generously gifted me some exquisite arabica coffee beans to take home, and I also sampled their chocolate.
I was captivated by their brand, which sources top-notch specialty coffee beans and cacao from India and its nearby regions, cultivating these elements to create something extraordinary for the Indian coffee industry.
Fast forward to 2025, after a guest stint at a coffee establishment in London, I was thrilled to discover they would be inaugurating a coffee shop in Dubai before the close of 2025, marking it as the first Indian specialty coffee shop to launch in Dubai, to my knowledge.
Situated in the chic and increasingly popular Alserkal Avenue, I was unsure what to anticipate… yet another coffee shop, a roastery, or…
Much beyond that.
A coffee shop, a coffee roastery, a chocolate production facility, a kitchen, a bakery.
The Space
Upon entry, there is a dedicated coffee brewing bar featuring a three-group La Marzocco espresso machine, accommodating takeaway coffee, pastries, their canned coffee, and bread for convenient pickup.
When I initially visited, I thought that was all there was, but I was mistaken. Just wait.
As you stroll through the expansive space, you are welcomed to browse their merchandise ranging from t-shirts to coffee, tea, and more. On the left side, there’s a compact office-style cubicle for meetings, followed by a small Giesen coffee roasting machine, leading you to the back area, beneath the stairs, where you can observe them crafting chocolate and taste it as well.
If you take a right turn, you’ll notice them baking bread and pastries too… enticing.
The upper floor is designed as a sit-down café, complete with its own brew bar and another La Marzocco Strada.
The seating area has an enigmatic layout, with artwork and tables tucked away in corners, so if you can’t locate a spot to sit, explore deeper inside.
The Menu
So, what delights await?
With an extensive menu that features not only coffee drinks but also sandwiches, breakfast selections, pastries, and desserts, you’ll be spoiled for options as the menu genuinely resembles a book.
I visited not once but three times during their opening month, bringing along friends and family.
Their Coffee
In summary;
Their coffee is “meticulously sourced from the Subcontinent. Crafted with precision by expert Arabica Q Graders, every bean is handpicked from regional plantations, guaranteeing a journey of unmatched quality and flavor.”
They engage in direct trade relationships with coffee estates and smallholder farmers, who harvest and (often experimentally) process coffees that they strive to curate into exclusively SCA 85+ point scoring coffees” (source: https://www.subko.coffee/pages/coffee )
During my first visit, I enjoyed a cortado alongside a Basque cheesecake, which I encouraged my wife to try on my second visit.
However, regarding coffee, I must admit I favored their batch brew using Project Pearl – but ensure you request it hot.
Their Food
You’ll be truly spoiled for options and might feel overwhelmed by what to choose. They present their take on shakshuka, delectable pastries, a multi-layered croissant, which I sampled, non-coffee non-alcoholic coffee cocktails, and innovative sandwiches.
I tasted the Harrira Moroccan-inspired chicken sandwich in their scrumptious sourdough, and a butter chicken styled sourdough sandwich, which might seem substantial but was delightful, with my kids requesting it twice in one meal.
On my third visit, my friends and I purchased their tasty sourdough.
So, what else awaits?
You’ll need to discover for yourself, BUT genuinely, I believe you’ll be curious about what they’re creating, as during my last visit, their owner mentioned they were still finalizing their plans.
Highly recommended.
