Last year, I posted about my 10 top picks from Trader Joe’s. While I still have a deep love for several of those products — beans in tomato sauce is a regular dinner fixture at my place — I’ve discovered a few new (or new-to-me) favorites that I’m eager to highlight. Here are 10 items I’m currently fond of at Trader Joe’s…
Frozen Sliced Shiitake Mushrooms. I never leave TJ’s without at least a couple of bags. I adore shiitake mushrooms, but oddly, it’s tough to find them all by themselves (not mixed with other vegetables or in a pre-made stir-fry, for example). The mushrooms at TJ’s are consistently earthy and buttery, and their texture remains intact after thawing. My preferred method for using them is in this vegetarian shepherd’s pie recipe, which I’ve made no less than seven times in the last quarter — these mushrooms truly elevate the dish.
PB&J Oat Bites. Though small, these bites are dense, chewy, and definitely not muffins. They are all oats and no flour (they’re gluten-free) and surprisingly satisfying. I keep one in my backpack for mornings when I don’t have time to eat breakfast before leaving. I just wish the mysterious decision-makers at TJ’s would create a nut-free version, so I could pack them in my daughter’s school backpack as well!
Freeze-Dried Fruit. The stock of this item fluctuates significantly, so it’s always a surprise what freeze-dried fruits will be available — strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and mangoes are common choices (I found apricots last week!) — but I buy them regardless. They’re tasty on their own, but I also use the strawberries to create strawberry milk, and the blueberries are excellent for adding color and flavor to yogurt or overnight oats.
Lemongrass Coconut Body Oil. I picked this up last summer, in a fit of annoyance and desperation, after experiencing a severe mosquito invasion at the playground (they zoomed right to my ankles, everyone). It felt and smelled amazingly good. The oil is rich, so a small amount goes a long way. I now keep it in the shower and apply it just before stepping out. If you appreciate a vibrant, green fragrance that doesn’t smell overly perfume-like, this one’s for you.
Quinoa & Black Bean Infused Tortilla Chips. These chips don’t receive the recognition they deserve within the Trader Joe’s community, and although I don’t want them to become overly popular and sell out, I think it’s time they got a well-deserved mention. In my view, these are the perfect dipping chips. They’re robust and thick and can handle any guac or chunky salsa you have. Personally, I enjoy them by themselves. They’re full of flavor, but unlike other flavored tortilla chips, they’re not so overloaded with lime salt that they irritate your mouth (I love you, Hint of Lime chips, but deep down, we both know it’s not just a “hint”).
Chicken Gyoza Potstickers + Soyaki + Thai Style Red Curry Sauce. Another recipe I’ve unexpectedly been making quite often recently? The viral Trader Joe’s dumpling bake. I don’t know who originally decided to combine these three TJ’s products and bake them atop a bed of spinach, but I’d love to thank them. It’s one of those magical meals that everyone in the family enjoys, but what makes it even better is the clean-up is simpler than the preparation. You mix all the sauces directly in the casserole dish, meaning there are no extra bowls or utensils to wash. It’s the small victories!
Fried Rice. My husband frequently stops by TJ’s on his way home just to check out the latest in the frozen fried rice section, and we’ve yet to try one we didn’t enjoy. Our usual approach is to stir-fry it with whatever vegetables or proteins we have in the fridge — or just top it with an egg. Boom! Dinner.
Norwegian Crispbread. I’m a huge fan of these seedy, sturdy items — they’re the true unsung hero of the pantry aisle. As straightforward as a cracker, yet so much more. They withstand heavy toppings, like tuna salad or a hearty nut butter smear, and they don’t crumple under moisture, so bring on the dips. In flavor, they’re so subtle that they complement nearly anything, but they offer so much texture that they’re far from dull. I enjoy them with TJ’s garlic spread, but my top way to use them is for making a simple, open-face PB&J for an afternoon snack.
Now it’s your turn! What’s on your must-try list?
