A Much-Anticipated Comeback
I have been familiar with Typica for quite some time. In fact, I attended their grand opening in September 2019 during a layover in Dubai, prior to relocating here in 2020. At that time, I frequently sought opportunities to stop by or meet acquaintances there, as I considered them one of the top coffee spots in Dubai.
Regrettably for coffee enthusiasts in Dubai, they relocated a few years back to Ras Al Khaimah, another emirate within the UAE, approximately an hour and a quarter’s drive away, barring traffic. Therefore, when my wife and I ventured there for a staycation last month and I learned that Typica was merely a ten-minute drive from our hotel, I was absolutely thrilled. A moment of sheer coffee enthusiasm.
Initial Impressions
After a day of unwinding, we decided to visit them. Upon entering, I noticed immediately that this location was significantly larger than their prior spot in Dubai, which felt more like a tiny café with minimal seating.
In comparison, this new venue was enormous.
During our visit, it was relatively quiet; initially, my wife and I were the only patrons. Yet, the attentive barista informed us that the place becomes much busier in the evenings when the temperatures drop and more locals come in. Fortuitously for us, we received the host’s full attention and were able to converse a bit longer.
The Coffee Flight and…
I wandered around, took some photos, and observed that they now featured a Modbar.
I also recalled that, before their closure in Dubai, Typica had offered something known as a coffee flight, where they presented a special coffee both as an espresso and as a cortado with specially prepared milk – frozen first, then prepared to emphasize the creaminess and sweetness of the milk, delicious.
Naturally, I had to ask the barista if I could sample it again. Although it wasn’t listed on the menu, he graciously agreed and made it for me. Hooray!

Feeling the heat outdoors, my wife opted for an affogato (double espresso poured over a delectable vanilla ice cream).
Breakfast, Ambiance, and that Typica Touch
They now also offer breakfast; however, since we had already savored our complimentary breakfast at the hotel, I merely scanned the menu and noticed how easy it would be to visit in the morning, enjoy superb coffee, and partake in an enticing breakfast.
I must admit; I truly missed this coffee shop: their meticulous attention to detail, their mastery, and their approach to coffee.
I felt slightly disappointed that I didn’t get to meet the founder and owner, Michaela, who has clinched the UAE National Barista Championship multiple times and competed at the highest tier in the World Barista Championship while expecting her first child a few years ago.

Their coffee is sourced from one of my favorite coffee roasters, Goldbox, and there is an impressive selection of various coffees ranging from espresso blends to single origin lots available for purchase.

The visit was certainly worthwhile, and if you find yourself in Ras Al Khaimah, or if you are an avid coffee enthusiast in Dubai willing to make the journey to one of the finest coffee shops in the UAE, I highly suggest that you experience Typica.
