The previous month, I received an invitation to a China Arab Expo in Yinchuan, a city roughly two hours west of Beijing by plane. Although I couldn’t find a coffee shop there, I resorted to my aeropress for my caffeine fix, knowing that Beijing would surely have more options. So, prior to my visit, I used Google to look up the best specialty coffee in Beijing, and, unsurprisingly, Voyage Coffee appeared on the list.
On my second day in Beijing, I made it a point that my initial stop in exploring the city, or should I say in my quest for good coffee, was at the arts district, 798 751 Park, where Voyage Coffee is situated. At first, I was a little hesitant since I entirely underestimated the scale of this venue, and not having WIFI made me anxious. However, upon entering from the main entry, which is in a pedestrian-only area, I spotted a sign directing me to Voyage Coffee on my right… and there it was!
I discovered that the main entrance was situated in a sort of cul-de-sac, leading to a mini adventure.
Upon entering, I was welcomed with a cheerful Nihao (hello in Chinese) amidst a Scandinavian-styled interior adorned with light brown wood and concrete – urban Nordic chic, if you will.
They feature a La Marzocco Strada alongside Mazzer grinders, and the menu has Chinese on one side and English on the other. The café buzzed with activity, filled with both locals and expats working on laptops while sipping their coffees.
I noticed their Probat 12kg coffee roaster encased in glass for everyone to view. The barista informed me that they roast coffee every Tuesday. I decided on a flat white made with their Black Forest blend, despite it being late afternoon since I hadn’t had espresso-based coffee in days, paired with a New York-style cheesecake.
Delicious. Tasting notes of chocolate and dried fruit lingered on the edges of my palate, and the cheesecake was of the sort my wife would have loved.
Before I finished my coffee, Cody, the lead barista, approached me with an offer of a Kenyan cold brew.
I think she noticed that I appeared more engaged than the other customers when inquiring about the coffee earlier, plus her English was the most fluent, as the others looked a bit confused when I started discussing flavor profiles.
I appreciated it so much that I wanted to purchase a bag of beans, and Cody was thrilled, rushing to the back to get one for me, BUT unfortunately, they were out of stock. I chose her second suggestion, an Ethiopian Mansa, due to its natural processing.
I recorded some videos for my Instagram reels and made my exit.
Highly recommended when visiting Beijing.
I strolled around the art district as someone suggested checking out another coffee shop, which I was unable to find, but I did stop by Manner coffee, which was acceptable, and I noticed %arabica, known for its cool decor, although I found their beans roasted too dark for my taste, so I skipped it.
