In 2025, I’ve enjoyed numerous coffee adventures, with some familiar faces and others I’ve yet to discover. I often find myself hoping—maybe even praying—that one of my favorite spots would open in my city, and I got lucky when I stumbled upon Coffee News reporting that Watchhouse, the top specialty coffee chain from London, was setting up shop in Dubai. The best part? It wasn’t a long wait of two years, but rather just weeks, and that came to fruition in November 2025. Hooray!
Nestled in a trendy pop-up area named Marsa Boulevard, which is open from 4pm to midnight, right beside Dubai Festival City Mall, you’ll find Watchhouse, surrounded by several local coffee and pastry brands along with a handful of international names.
You’ll be pleased to know I visited twice within four days.
On my first trip, it came as no surprise to see a lengthy queue; many Emiratis in line are likely well-acquainted with this brand from central London.
I patiently waited alongside my daughter and, since it was evening, I opted for a batch brew. Seating was limited due to the crowd, but we managed to snag two spots in front of their brew bar, which was adorned with numerous V60 brewers.
Later, one of the baristas informed me that they pre-dose and pack their filter coffees, freeze them, and start brewing as soon as an order is placed. While we waited for my coffee, I spotted an AeroPress championship trophy and inquired, “Who won this?” as I had recently judged the UAE AeroPress championship and had met the competitor who came in third.
He generously invited us to enjoy any coffee we desired on the house, and my daughter chose matcha… (I was thinking coffee… but you know how GenZ is… sigh). Regardless, I opted for a flat white to try out their milk-based beverages.
I’m not sure what they added to it, but it certainly became one of my top flat whites of the year… why? Upon asking the manager about it, I learned about the milk they used, which I believe made all the difference, as their espresso blend, 1829 Espresso, is the same one served in London.
The batch brew was delightful as well, with notes of dark fruit, but I soon realized he had given me Ethiopian instead of the El Salvador (if I remember correctly) I had ordered.
A few days later, I met a friend for lunch at the same mall, and by the time we finished, I realized it was 3:30pm… just 30 minutes until Watchhouse opened. So, I wandered around and arrived precisely at 4pm… I was their very first customer. I took a stroll and snapped a few pictures. I was tempted to splurge on a cake slice… who wouldn’t be?
However, a staff member suggested that a chocolate tart (see last pic) would pair perfectly with my flat white, and I yielded to the suggestion. My flat white was beautifully crafted by one of their leading baristas from Cameroon. (Oops, I forgot his name).
I also met the head barista from Zimbabwe, who educated me on their philosophy, and I shared that I had been familiar with the brand for years and it’s my go-to in London.
Another delightful experience.
I’m eager to return and sample one of these with my wife….
Perhaps the mini-Basque cheesecake.
