A few days after arriving in Vienna last month and browsing through Instagram, I noticed that Wild Kaffee seemed to have launched a coffee shop in Vienna alongside 2024 World Brewers Champion Martin Wölfl. However, a quick check on Google Maps revealed that there was no such coffee shop in Vienna; it only existed in Germany, where Wild Kaffee is based. While visiting Balthasar, I encountered the owner, Otto, who affirmed that they had indeed opened and were situated at Pilgramgasse 6. Thus, on a day when I had some spare time with my wife and son, we set out to locate it.
Oh no, where is it?
In fact, we inadvertently entered another café first, and as I enjoyed my coffee there, I couldn’t shake the feeling that Martin’s establishment was just across the street. Sure enough, after crossing over and stepping inside, I instantly realized we had arrived.
Ambiance and Initial Impressions
The coffee place has a refreshing and distinctive vibe, characterized by bright green brand colors and an attractive granite brewing counter that lends the space both a polished and inviting feel.
The area itself exceeded my expectations in size and was pleasantly bustling with activity. Best of all, Martin was present. The last time I had seen him was at World of Coffee Dubai earlier this year, so it was a delight to reconnect in his café.
Coffee Setup
As a coffee enthusiast, my eyes were immediately drawn to the setup: a bespoke Slayer espresso machine, neatly arranged coffee bags providing a clean aesthetic, and three Mahlkönig grinders lined up across the counter that I assumed were designated for various espresso-based coffees meant for house blends and guest selections. To the far left of the setup was the advanced brew bar, naturally.
Coffee
After Martin had taken care of a few customers, we engaged in a brief conversation where I mentioned being advised to try the Panama espresso. However, feeling like something milk-based, I chose a cortado instead, and Martin graciously offered to prepare it himself.
Really, who could refuse coffee made by a world champion?
He presented it in one of the most unique cups I’ve encountered – the 2-way cup “barista series”. Its design was slightly asymmetrical, with one flat side and one more curved side. Martin explained that each side accentuated different facets of the coffee.
From one side, I detected more body and depth, while from the other, I picked up brighter, fruitier notes. As you can imagine, this thrilled the coffee enthusiast in me.
Of course, I couldn’t leave without sampling a filter coffee made under the expertise of a World Brewers Champion. Following Martin’s suggestion, I went for an El Salvador with flavors of blueberry, vanilla, and apple pie.
He brewed it for me, and I shared it with my wife, which made the whole experience even more memorable.
Retail Selection
I spent some time examining their retail coffee options and was impressed by the diversity available, and like Square Mile in London, they also sell 350g bags.
They offered espresso blends, single origins, and a myriad of choices for filter brewing, alongside pastries for those who crave something sweet with their coffee. Naturally, I couldn’t resist purchasing a bag to bring home, which I requested ground for AeroPress brewing during my stay in Vienna.
I actually returned another day with a friend, and the café was packed, which is always a positive indicator. This time, I decided to try their long black.
On my final visit, I knew I had to take some coffee back to Dubai. Confused about which one to choose, the barista kindly brewed me their house blend as espresso, which I enjoyed, so that’s what I decided on.
However, I wasn’t finished yet, as I was particularly interested in their filter bags, which offered a fun and practical method to brew quality coffee without too much hassle, especially while traveling or on flights. For around €10.5, you receive 10 bags, which I found to be an excellent deal, particularly for something so convenient and thoughtfully designed.
Final Reflections
Overall, this is likely my favorite coffee shop in Vienna at the moment. Why? Because I appreciated the attention to detail, the variety of coffees, the inviting atmosphere, and above all, Martin’s gracious hospitality.
He was approachable, eager to share advice, and clearly passionate about his craft. Yes, I can envision it becoming quite busy, and rightly so, but it’s exactly the type of place that makes a coffee outing unforgettable. If you wish for something sweet to accompany your coffee, you can select from various pastries as well.
Therefore, if you find yourself in Vienna and care at all about exceptional specialty coffee, I would certainly recommend adding this café to your itinerary.
