Last month, I received an invitation to participate in a China Arab Expo in Yinchuan, a city approximately two hours west of Beijing by air. Although I couldn’t find any coffee shop there, I resorted to using my aeropress for my coffee needs, aware that Beijing would have greater selections. Therefore, before embarking on my journey, I turned to Google to look up the finest specialty coffee shops in Beijing, and lo and behold, Voyage Coffee was among the top results.
On my second day in Beijing, I prioritized my quest for good coffee by heading to the art district, 798 751 Park, the home of Voyage Coffee. Initially, I felt a bit uneasy due to my underestimation of the size of this venue, and the absence of Wi-Fi added to my anxiety. However, as I entered through the main entrance, which is situated in a pedestrian area, I spotted a sign directing me to Voyage Coffee on my right… bingo!
I discovered that the main entrance was located in a cul-de-sac of sorts, leading to a mini adventure.
Upon entering, I was welcomed with a cheerful Nihao (hello in Chinese) and a Scandinavian-style interior adorned with light brown wood and concrete—it was what I would call urban Nordic chic.
The café features a La Marzocco Strada paired with Mazzer grinders, and the menu presents Chinese on one side and English on the other. The café was bustling with both locals and expatriates, some engaged in work on their laptops while savoring their coffees.
I noticed their Probat 12kg coffee roaster, which was encased in glass for viewing. A barista informed me that they roast every Tuesday. I decided on a flat white using their Black Forest blend, despite it being late afternoon and having not had an espresso-based coffee for days, along with a New York-style cheesecake.
Delicious. It had delightful hints of chocolate and dried fruit dancing on my palate, and the cheesecake was something my wife would have wholeheartedly endorsed.
Before I could finish my coffee, Cody, the lead barista, approached me with an offer of a Kenyan cold brew coffee.
She likely noticed that I appeared more serious than other patrons when asking questions about the coffee earlier, plus she had the best command of English, as the others seemed puzzled when I inquired about flavor profiles.
I was so impressed that I wanted to purchase a bag of beans, and Cody was thrilled, rushing to the back to fetch one for me, but unfortunately, they had sold out. I went with her second suggestion, an Ethiopian Mansa, as it was a naturally processed bean.
I recorded some videos for my Instagram reels and then departed.
Definitely worth a visit while in Beijing.
I strolled through the art district when someone suggested checking another coffee shop, which I couldn’t locate, but I did try Manner coffee, which was decent, and saw %arabica, which had a trendy décor, yet I found their beans too darkly roasted for my taste, so I skipped it.
You can find them at China, Beijing, Chaoyang, 酒仙桥路4号北京798艺术区内 邮政编码: 100102
