Thus, on my second day in Beijing, I ensured that my initial destination in exploring the city—or rather, seeking out excellent coffee—was the art district, 798 751 Park, where Voyage Coffee is situated. Initially, I felt a bit uneasy as I underestimated the scale of this venue and, lacking WIFI, I felt a bit frantic. However, upon entering from the main entrance, set within a pedestrian area, I spotted a sign directing me to Voyage Coffee on my right… bingo!
I discovered that the main entrance was part of a small cul-de-sac, leading to a mini adventure.
Upon stepping inside, I was welcomed with a cheerful Nihao (hello in Chinese) and greeted by a Scandinavian-style interior characterized by light brown wood and concrete—urban Nordic chic is what I would term it.
They feature a La Marzocco Strada equipped with Mazzer grinders, and the menu is presented with Chinese on one side and English on the other. The café was bustling with both locals and expatriates, with some patrons working on laptops while savoring their coffees.
I observed their Probat 12kg coffee roaster encased in glass for all to admire. From their barista, I learned they roast every Tuesday. I opted for a flat white crafted with their Black Forest blend, despite it being late afternoon and having abstained from espresso-based beverages for several days, paired with a NY-style cheesecake.
Delicious. Notes of chocolate and dried fruit lingered on the edge of my palate, and the cheesecake was something my wife would have endorsed.
Before I finished my drink, Cody, the head barista, approached me to offer a Kenyan cold brew coffee.
I believe she observed that I was a tad more earnest than the other customers when I inquired about the coffee earlier, plus she was proficient in English while the other staff seemed a bit confused by my questions about flavor profiles.
I enjoyed it so immensely that I wished to purchase a bag of beans, and Cody was thrilled, rushing to the back to retrieve one for me, BUT unfortunately, they were out of stock. I chose her second recommendation, an Ethiopian Mansa, due to its natural processing.
