From London to Dubai.
We’ve encountered a few places similar to this in Dubai, be it an upscale eatery, a pastry shop, or a boutique, BUT when it comes to specialty coffee, this is quite uncommon. In fact, one of my favorite specialty coffee spots from London is set to open in Dubai this week or next – more details on that when I visit, God willing.
Now, let’s talk about Half Cup, Dubai.
I had not previously heard of this establishment, but when our daughter suggested we go there to celebrate my wife’s birthday with brunch, I looked them up along with their coffee offerings, and off we went.
It’s located within a new residential complex in Business Bay, encircled by elegant apartment buildings named Peninsula 1, 2, 3, and so on. As you drive in, you could be in any part of the world, with a canal view not too far away. Half Cup itself is ultra-modern, resembling a glass box filled with sunlight, and there are some outdoor seats for when the temperature drops – yes, it does cool down in Dubai, from early November to around late March.
Although there aren’t many seats indoors, we managed to secure one upon entering. We were served by what might be my waiter of the year, Chris, who was exceptionally attentive and helpful. I believe the first misstep we made was not heeding his advice on the portion sizes. Whoa!
I’m not certain if you can gauge the size of our Turkish Eggs order with beef brisket, but the BBQ Beef Brisket Brioche sandwich was sizable enough for three.
Whoa!!!!
If you decide to visit and order eggs royale, be warned that it’s sufficiently portioned for two as I noticed at the next table.
So, how was the coffee?
On top of an eye-catching steel brewing bar was their two group La Marzocco Linea espresso machine paired with two Victoria Arduino grinders. They offer a range of coffee selections, suitable for both filter and espresso, roasted locally by one of my top roasteries in Dubai, so I felt confident in their selection. I chose a flat white made with Brazilian beans.
Delicious with notes of nuts and milk chocolate. It’s fortunate that I ordered this prior to my meal as I often do when I have eggs cooked in tomato sauce, i.e., the Turkish eggs. Otherwise, I might have found it challenging to finish my coffee.
Highly recommend, and did I mention they have a dinner menu as well?
