From London to Dubai.
We’ve encountered a few places like this in Dubai, whether it’s an upscale eatery, a bakery, or a shop, BUT when it comes to specialty coffee, it’s quite uncommon. In fact, one of my favorite specialty coffee shops from London will be debuting in Dubai this week or next – more details on that when I check it out, God willing.
So, moving on to Half Cup, Dubai.
I hadn’t heard of this place before, but when our daughter proposed that we go there to celebrate my wife’s birthday over brunch, I looked them up and their coffee and off we went.
It’s located in a new residential development in Business Bay, surrounded by sophisticated-looking apartment complexes named Peninsula 1, 2, 3, etc. As you approach, it feels like anywhere in the world, with a canal view not far away. Half Cup itself is extremely modern, resembling a glass box filled with sunlight, and it has some outdoor seating for when the weather cools down – yes, it does get cooler in Dubai, from early November until late March.
Although inside seating is limited, we scored a table as we entered. Our server, Chris, who was probably my waiter of the year, was very attentive and helpful. I think one of our first missteps was not taking his advice on portion sizes. Whoa!
I’m not sure if the size of our Turkish Eggs with beef brisket is evident, but the BBQ Beef Brisket Brioche sandwich could easily feed three.
Whoa!!!!
If you decide to visit and order the eggs royale, be warned that it’s also enough for two, as I noticed at the next table.
Now, how about the coffee?
Atop an eye-catching steel brewing bar was a dual group La Marzocco Linea espresso machine paired with two Victoria Arduino grinders. They have a diverse selection of coffees for both filter and espresso, locally roasted by one of my favorite roasteries in Dubai, so I had confidence in their offerings. I opted for a flat white made with Brazilian beans.
Delicious with notes of nuts and milk chocolate. I was glad I ordered this before my meal, as I often do when choosing eggs prepared in a tomato sauce, like the Turkish eggs. Otherwise, finishing my coffee might have been a struggle.
Highly recommended, and did I mention they also have a dinner menu?
I’m already eager for my next visit because whenever I discover great food and coffee, you can bet I’ll soon be planning my return.
