After a long wait for TV, I switched on The Other Bennet Sister…
Truthfully, the trailer left me uncertain about watching it. The jokes didn’t land, and the whole show seemed dull. But! I decided to give it a shot, as the saying goes, and five minutes into the first episode, I was captivated.
The narrative centers on Mary Bennet, the third of five sisters, whom Jane Austen described in Pride and Prejudice as “the only plain one in the family” with “neither genius nor taste.” (Ouch!) Yet, in the series, after Mary’s four sisters tie the knot and leave, she moves to London seeking work as a governess and hopes for happiness — and possibly love.
Honestly, I was thoroughly charmed. I adored the actress Ella Bruccoleri, the empire-waist attire, and the breathtaking scenery during their Lake District visit. But mostly, it was surprisingly satisfying to follow a character cherished for her intellect. People are drawn to her — as friends or potential partners — for her honest discussions, insights on books, matrimony, society, and geology, and her affection for people not despite but because of their quirks. “There is no one I long to talk to as I do you,” a love interest confesses to her.
I’m 47 and pretty cool with myself at this stage, but still, watching this series felt like new for me. As a woman, it’s so common to watch something and find yourself thinking, even subconsciously, Could I wear that dress? Is my skin as dewy as that? Should I put more effort into my hair? If a character’s aim is to look beautiful — and it usually is, either overtly or subtly — you can’t help but pose these questions as a viewer; it’s instinctive. However, while watching Mary Bennet, I kept pondering, Oooh, what books do I adore most? What questions can I ask to draw people out? Who do I love having fascinating talks with among my friends and family? What amusing animal facts do I know?? And how refreshing these questions are! It makes me incredibly happy to think of girls watching this series and contemplating these things, instead of the eternal question, am I pretty?
Will you watch The Other Bennet Sister? I’d highly encourage it! What are you currently watching? Any fresh shows, or cherished past series? xoxo
