Conveying Appreciation to My Gynecology Physician Assistant

Conveying Appreciation to My Gynecology Physician Assistant

The previous week, I headed into Manhattan and climbed four flights of stairs to a bustling ob-gyn office. My feet dragged —who actually wants to undergo a pap smear?— but I dutifully signed the register, completed the paperwork, and made my way to the examination room.

After a few minutes, the door opened, and a physician assistant introduced herself. I thought she would ask me to lie down so we could proceed, yet instead, she inquired, kindly, “Would you like to begin with the breast exam or the pelvic exam?” Pleasantly surprised at having the choice, I opted for the breast exam. As I raised each arm above my head, she clarified that she was looking for lumps or unusual skin changes and offered advice on how to check the same at home in the shower. Following this, we proceeded to the pelvic exam. “First, I’m going to place two gloved fingers into your vagina and then press down from the outside. I’m assessing the size and shape of your uterus and ovaries…” As the exam went on, she described every action she took, what sensation it might cause, while ensuring I knew what she was watching for and what she observed.

Truly, I was astonished. I realized during this appointment that it was the first time a gynecology clinician had genuinely taken me through the process step-by-step. Here I am, 47, and have given birth to two children! Naturally, I’ve always placed trust in my doctors and nurses, but during every annual gynecology visit, I would simply “lie back and think of England,” as the expression goes, with fingers and specula inserted while a fluorescent ceiling light glared into my eyes. This was the first occasion where an appointment unfolded with such warmth and direct communication. Wearing my blue cotton robe, with nothing else, lying vulnerably with legs apart, I felt profoundly respected and completely secure.

Therefore, I extend my gratitude to the wonderful physician assistant who, during her hectic day in downtown Manhattan, takes care to treat each patient as a whole individual. I’m especially grateful for all the teenagers and young individuals she will encounter in the years to come. What a splendid example she’s offering to them concerning how people can and should treat you and your body. xoxo

On a related note, this made me smile: “I have a friend who is an OB nurse practitioner,” shared Katie on Big Salad. “She just acquired a vanity plate that says SCOOTDOWN, and it is delightful.”

Thoughts? Do you have love notes for individuals who have cared for you? Do any readers have careers in the medical field?
