In 2025, I’ve experienced numerous coffee moments, a mix of the familiar and the fresh. I often find myself hoping—and maybe even praying—that one of my favorite spots would establish itself in my city. Thus, my wishes came true when I discovered in Coffee News that Watchhouse, a leading specialty coffee brand from London, was set to open in Dubai. What’s more, this wasn’t one of those announcements predicting an opening two years down the line, but rather just weeks away, which indeed transpired in November 2025. How exciting!
Situated in a trendy pop-up area named Marsa Boulevard, operational from 4 pm to 12 pm, next to Dubai Festival City Mall, Watchhouse shares this space with several local coffee and dessert establishments along with a handful of global franchises.
You’ll be pleased to hear that I visited twice within just four days.
During my initial visit, I wasn’t shocked to see a lengthy line, as I’m certain many Emiratis there were already acquainted with this brand from central London.
Patiently waiting with my daughter and ordering a batch brew, we were somewhat constrained for seating due to the crowd, but managed to find a couple of spots in front of their brewing station, adorned with various V60 brewers.
Later, a barista informed me that they pre-dose and pack their filter coffees, freezing them until an order is placed, at which point they simply brew them. While we awaited my coffee, I spotted an AeroPress championship trophy and inquired, “Who secured this?” as I had judged the UAE AeroPress championship just two days before and was introduced to the gentleman who ranked third.
He generously offered us any coffee we wished, on the house. My daughter opted for matcha … (I was envisioning coffee… but you know how trends and GenZ are… sigh). Regardless, I decided on a flat white, hoping to taste their milk-based offerings.
I’m not sure what they did to this drink, but it quickly became one of my favorite flat whites of the year… Why? I asked the manager about it, and he mentioned the milk used, which I realized made the difference, since their espresso blend, 1829 Espresso, remained the same as what’s offered in London.
The batch brew was lovely, featuring notes of dark fruit, although I later realized I was served Ethiopian instead of the El Salvador (I believe) that I initially ordered.
A few days later, I met a friend for lunch at the same mall and when we wrapped up, I noticed it was 3:30 pm…. Just 30 minutes till Watchhouse opened. So, I took a leisurely stroll, arriving promptly at 4 pm…. I was their first customer. I wandered around, snapping some photos. I was tempted to indulge and grab a slice of cake… who wouldn’t.
A staff member suggested that a chocolate tart (last pic) would pair beautifully with my flat white, and I gave in. My flat white was skillfully poured by one of their head baristas, who came from Cameroon. (Oops, I forgot his name).
I met the chief barista from Zimbabwe, who elaborated on their philosophy, and I mentioned my long familiarity with the brand; it has been my go-to in London.
Another delightful experience.
