Initial Impressions
I finally arrived at Farha, London. I had been aware of Farha, which translates to joy in Arabic, for quite some time, having tracked their journey before they opened toward the end of last year. Therefore, when I had the chance to return to London this summer, I was eagerly anticipating it but also sincerely hoping the lines wouldn’t be excessively long.
Why? Well, the photos I had seen on Instagram depicted waits of 40 to 45 minutes and even up to an hour at times. Why? Keep reading.
To begin with, Farha has made a significant mark as they not only serve excellent coffee, but their tempting, alluring, and beautifully crafted pastries will surely make your mouth water. I happened to visit on Father’s Day in London with my daughter, and after having met the owner, Umar, before the shop opened, it was nice to finally see him in his establishment.
The shop itself is exquisitely designed and reminded me of my well-known quote, “the drink of the escapist.” Upon entering Farha, you could easily feel transported to North Africa, as some design aspects are inspired by Morocco. It truly takes you away.
Pastries
As you walk in, a tempting selection of pastries greets you. Which one to choose?
I already knew my choice, having followed them on Instagram for several months, and when it was time to select, I definitely craved their renowned banana brûlée praline.
Also available was their mango cheesecake pastry, which I simply couldn’t resist.
Since it was still early for breakfast, we opted to try their acclaimed egg shakshuka pastry roll as well. We grabbed two of those.
We settled down at the back, which was fortunate as it allowed us some space to appreciate the visual appeal and all the unique features of this wonderfully decorated coffee shop. After we polished off the shakshuka egg roll, Umar came over to check on us and asked if we wanted anything more.
Well, how could I say no? He brought us another pastry to try—the pear saffron one, which we couldn’t finish as we were already too stuffed, so we decided to take that home.
Everything in the shop, particularly the pastries, is artistically crafted by their skilled pastry chefs. Naturally, I wanted to snap some photos using one of my iPhone’s studio options (see above). Old habits from being a coffee blogger, I suppose.
The Coffee
I started with a cortado made from their house blend… with subtle hints of milk chocolate.
After our savory and sweet pastry experience, I opted to conclude with a filter coffee brewed from Kenyan beans. I have a particular fondness for Kenyan naturals, and this one met my expectations.
I followed that up with my favorite pastry, the banana brûlée praline (okay, how often am I going to mention this, sigh) BUT Yum!
Before we left, Umar graciously offered us some additional drinks. I succumbed and chose an iced coffee, as it was a rather warm day in London, around 28C. My daughter opted for one of their special cold iced teas. We explored a bit more, took a few additional pictures, and then decided to move on to our next Father’s Day destination.
Growth Opportunities
Seated towards the back, Umar showed us around the area where all the pastries are displayed for the day, and then he elaborated on some of their growth ambitions.
So far, several upscale coffee shops have reportedly visited them. I won’t name them here for privacy reasons, but the word has clearly spread across London about the exquisite pastries at this café. Tourists already make the 30-minute journey from West London to stop by, grab a few pastries, and then return home.
In the future, Omar and his team plan to start offering breakfast and brunch options, and maybe lighter lunch items as well. They are also considering expanding the specialty coffee aspects, possibly introducing a proper brew bar. That would certainly be thrilling.
Final Reflections
Overall, although Farha is situated in Leytonstone, it’s not far if you’re already in the West End. It takes about a 15-minute journey from Oxford Circus and roughly a five-minute walk from the station. And believe me, you will not be let down.
Finding excellent pastries along with good coffee in one spot isn’t simple, but kudos to Farha for achieving that.
You will be transported into an entirely different realm, where your taste buds will not only appreciate the coffee but definitely the beautifully crafted and delicious pastries as well. I am already excited for my next visit, and I continue to wish Farha, Umar, and his team all the best in their forthcoming endeavors, God willing.
Find them here Farha, 42 High Road Leyton, London E15 2BP and note that they’re only open from Wednesday to Sundays.
