From London to Dubai.
We’ve encountered a few venues like this in Dubai, be it an upscale eatery, a bakery, or a store, BUT when it pertains to specialty coffee, this is quite uncommon. In fact, one of my favorite specialty coffee shops from London is set to open in Dubai this week or next – more on that following my visit, God willing.
So, let’s get to Half Cup, Dubai.
I had never come across this spot before, but when our daughter proposed we dine there to commemorate my wife’s birthday with brunch, I looked them up along with their coffee, and off we went.
It’s located in a new residential complex in Business Bay, flanked by stylish apartment buildings named Peninsula 1, 2, 3, etc., so as you approach, you could find yourself anywhere around the globe, with a canal view not far away. Half Cup itself is very modern, almost resembling a glass box filled with natural light and featuring some outdoor seating for when it cools down – yes, it can get cooler in Dubai, from early November to late March.
Although the indoor seating is limited, we managed to snag a spot when we arrived. We were served by what could be my waiter of the year, Chris, who was exceptionally attentive and accommodating. I believe our first mistake was not heeding his advice regarding portion sizes. Whoa!
I’m not sure if the size of our Turkish Eggs order topped with beef brisket is clear, but the BBQ Beef Brisket Brioche sandwich was sufficient for three.
Whoa!!!!
If you decide to visit and order the eggs royale, be warned that it’s also sizable enough for two, as I noticed at the neighboring table.
Now, what about the coffee?
Atop a striking steel brewing bar was their dual group La Marzocco Linea espresso machine paired with two Victoria Arduino grinders. They provide a variety of coffee selections for both filter and espresso roasted locally by one of my favorite roasteries in Dubai, so I was sure of their offerings. I opted for a flat white made with Brazilian beans.
Delicious with notes of nuts and milk chocolate. Thankfully, I ordered this before my meal, as I typically do when having eggs cooked in a tomato sauce, such as the Turkish eggs. Otherwise, it might have been tough for me to finish my coffee.
I highly recommend it, and did I mention they offer a dinner menu too?
I’m already anticipating my next visit because whenever I discover great food and coffee, you can bet I’ll be planning a return trip soon.
