An Extensive Guide to the Top Size-Inclusive Swimwear

An Extensive Guide to the Top Size-Inclusive Swimwear

I came across an interview with Jennifer Aniston once, where she was questioned — of all topics — about why she continuously appeared in the same swimsuit over the years. Her reply was along the lines of, “Uh, because I like it, find it comfortable, and they no longer produce that style, so yep, I’ll wear it until it disintegrates. Sorry, paparazzi?”

Finding a swimsuit that ticks all your specific boxes is TOUGH (for me: timeless cut, ample butt coverage, doesn’t slip off my shoulders when the waves crash). Naturally, there’s also the box all plus-size shoppers must tick: available in my size. When I discover a gem, I stick to it, Aniston-style.

Last summer, I found two. Now that this summer is commencing, I’m thrilled to reveal them. And since your swimwear criteria might vary, I reached out to a couple of knowledgeable friends in this area: podcast producer Mbiye Kasonga and Big Undies newsletter writer Corinne Fay. Without delay, here are our six tested and proven size-inclusive swimwear picks…

Old Navy Textured Swim Romper
Size: 00-30

This is my go-to suit, the one I plan to don at every beach outing and pool hang from now on. I always thought swim dresses and skirts were just a retailer’s way of saying: We’re not fond of your body; please cover as much as possible, thanks! However, this swim romper makes me feel utterly charming. The fabric is slightly thicker than an average suit and retains its shape with repeated use and washing. The shorts-style bottom is sufficiently long to prevent thigh chafing yet not so lengthy that it feels like wearing shorts in water. The straps are strap-like yet non-digging (and they pass the wave test).

Old Navy High-Waisted Retro Swim Shorts + Scoop-Neck Swim Top
Size: 00-30

After the romper introduced me to the delightful world of swim shorts, I ventured to try Old Navy’s separates. (By the way, this isn’t a sponsored post; Old Navy just excels!) Unsurprisingly, these shorts are also adorable, and the high waistband offers a very comfortable fit. I got them in black last year, and this year I picked up a pair in a lovely blue and textured 70s stripe — I couldn’t resist. As for the tops, Old Navy truly stands out here. The scoop necks provide sufficient support for lap swimming, yet there’s no pinching or digging anywhere. I miss the longline scoop-neck they offered last year (very intrigued by this longline deep v-neck), but this year’s shorter cut retains the same broad straps and back. I’m all in.

Raq Apparel Multi-Way Top + 90s Brief
Size: 30D-42O (top)
Size: 4-20 (brief)

Mbiye’s top recommendation: Raq Apparel. “I adore Raq’s separates,” she states. “Their tops provide excellent support for larger busts, and I appreciate the variations in their bottoms, allowing more coverage if desired. I often pair the Multi-Way Top with the 90s Brief, yet they also offer a cute boyshort I’ve had my eye on.” Raq offers great prints and color combinations as well (in love with this pink and brown). Mbiye adds: “I like that these swimsuits aren’t just visually appealing; you can actually move in them.”

Villa Fresca swim collection
Size: XS-4X
Just like me, Mbiye is a long-time fan of plus-size swimwear trailblazer Gabi Gregg — who revolutionized everything with her iconic fatkinis in the early 2010s. “I’m thrilled to shop her new line, Villa Fresca,” mentions Mbiye. Villa Fresca’s latest collection is stunning with rich tones and watercolor prints. “I cannot wait to snag this zebra bikini.”

Land’s End Tugless One-Piece
Size: 00-26
An enthusiast of classic styles, Corinne usually opts for “simple, plain designs I find timeless. I prioritize practicality in swimwear — I wish to splash around in a pool without adjusting my suit.” (The dream.) Land’s End is fantastic, Corinne notes: “I’m still wearing the older model of their one-piece with a front zip and intend to update it with the current version when the time comes. I appreciate a good color or texture, but I adore the simplicity of a black one-piece.”

Artesands swim separates
Size: 6-24
“I tend to seek swimsuits that don’t feature straps or buckles — surprisingly common in plus-size swimwear,” says Corinne. “While I admire them on others, I dislike how they feel against my skin.” They point to the stylish-yet-discreet Australian brand Artesands. “If I were searching for a new two-piece, I’d start here. Ultimately, I want something comfortable and enduring, and Artesands boasts a strong reputation.”

Huge thanks to Mbiye and Corinne for sharing their recommendations! If you’re still considering options, we showcased 5 friends trying on 25 swimsuits in Big Salad!
