From India with Affection. This isn’t the title of an upcoming film, but rather the inauguration of one of India’s leading specialty coffee shop brands in Dubai, which opened towards the close of 2025, enriching the already vibrant specialty coffee landscape in Dubai. I was familiar with Subko beforehand, having first crossed paths with their founder, Rahul Reddy, at the 2023 edition of the World of Coffee in Dubai. During our initial encounter, he generously provided me with some unique arabica coffee beans to take home, and I also sampled their chocolate.

Their brand piqued my curiosity, as they source premium specialty coffee beans and cacao from India and neighboring regions, cultivating them to create something extraordinary for the Indian coffee market.

Fast forward to 2025, and after making a guest appearance at a coffee shop in London, I was thrilled to discover that they were set to open a coffee shop in Dubai before the year’s end, marking the first Indian specialty coffee shop to debut in the city, as far as I am aware.

Situated in the trendy and increasingly popular Alserkal Avenue, I was uncertain about what to anticipate… another coffee shop, a roastery or…

Much more.

A coffee shop, a coffee roastery, a chocolate making facility, a kitchen, and a bakery.

The Space

Upon entering, you’ll find a dedicated coffee brewing bar featuring a three-group La Marzocco espresso machine, catering to takeaway coffee, pastries, their canned coffee, and bread for convenient pickup.

On my first visit, I assumed this was all they offered, but I was mistaken. Just wait for it.

As you navigate through the expansive space, you’re welcomed to browse their merchandise, ranging from t-shirts to coffee, tea, and more. On the left-hand side, there’s a small office-style cubicle area for meetings, followed by a compact Giesen coffee roasting machine, and further along, under the stairs, you can observe them making chocolate and even taste it.

How to taste coffee

If you veer to the right, you’ll spot them baking bread and pastries too… quite enticing.

The upper level is designed as a sit-down café, featuring its own brew bar and another La Marzocco Strada.

The seating arrangement has a whimsical layout, with artwork and tables tucked away in corners, so if you’re struggling to find a spot, venture deeper inside.

The Menu

So, what awaits you?

With an extensive menu that includes not only coffee beverages but also sandwiches, breakfast platters, pastries, and desserts, you’ll find yourself spoiled for choice, as the menu reads like a novel.

I visited not once, but three times in their opening month, sharing the experience with friends and family.

Their Coffee

In brief;

Their coffee is “meticulously sourced from the Subcontinent. Expertly crafted by skilled Arabica Q Graders, each bean is handpicked from local plantations, ensuring an exceptional journey of quality and flavor.”

They maintain direct trade connections with coffee estates and smallholder farmers, harvesting and (often experimentally) processing coffees that aim to curate exclusive SCA 85+ point scoring coffees” (source: https://www.subko.coffee/pages/coffee )

Cortado at Subko, Dubai

During my first visit, I enjoyed a cortado and a Basque cheesecake, which I encouraged my wife to try on my second visit.

However, in terms of coffee, I must admit I preferred their batch brew, utilizing Project Pearl – but ensure you request it hot.

Their Food

You are genuinely spoiled for options, and it may be daunting to decide what to eat. They offer their take on shakshuka, delightful pastries, a multi-layered croissant, which I sampled, non-coffee non-alcoholic coffee cocktails, and exciting sandwiches.

A sweet treat

I had the Harira Moroccan-inspired chicken sandwich in their delectable sourdough, a butter chicken-style sourdough sandwich, which may sound heavy but was delightful, with my children requesting it twice in one sitting.

On my third visit, my friends and I snagged their scrumptious sourdough.

So, what other delights await?

You’ll need to discover for yourself, BUT honestly, I think you’ll be fascinated by what they’re developing, as when I met their owner on my last visit, he mentioned they still hadn’t completed their plans.

Highly recommended.
