A few days after my arrival in Vienna last month and browsing through Instagram, I noticed that Wild Kaffee had launched a coffee shop in Vienna alongside 2024 World Brewers Champion Martin Wölfl. However, when I checked the address on Google Maps, I found nothing… no such coffee shop existed in Vienna, only in Germany, the birthplace of Wild Kaffee. While visiting Balthasar, I ran into the owner, Otto, who confirmed that they had indeed opened at Pilgramgasse 6. So, on one of my free days with my wife and son, we set out to locate it.
Oops, where are you?
In fact, we accidentally entered another café first, and as I enjoyed my coffee there, I kept thinking that Martin’s shop was actually just across the street. Sure enough, when we crossed over and walked in, I instantly recognized that we had arrived.
Décor and First Impressions
The coffee ambiance is fresh and distinctive, featuring vibrant green branding and a stunning granite brew counter that imparts a polished yet welcoming feel to the space.
The area was more spacious than I had anticipated and already surprisingly lively. Best of all, Martin was present. The last time I had encountered him was at World of Coffee Dubai earlier this year, so it was a pleasure to reconnect in his own café.
Coffee Setup
As a coffee enthusiast, my attention was immediately drawn to the setup: a custom-built Slayer espresso machine, coffee bags at the back for a tidy look, and three Mahlkönig grinders arranged neatly across the counter, which I assumed were for various espresso-based coffees designated for house blends and guest offerings. To the far left of the setup was the state-of-the-art brew bar, naturally.
Coffee
After Martin finished serving a few customers, we had a brief conversation, and I mentioned that I had been advised to try the Panama espresso. However, since I was in the mood for something with milk, I chose a cortado instead, and Martin graciously offered to prepare it for me personally.
After all, who would decline coffee crafted by a world champion?
He presented it in one of the most intriguing cups I’ve encountered – the 2-way cup “barista series”. Its design was slightly asymmetrical, with one side flatter and the other more rounded, and Martin explained that each side highlighted different aspects of the coffee.
From one perspective, I detected more body and depth, while from the other, I picked up on brighter, fruitier notes. As one can imagine, this thrilled the coffee enthusiast in me.
Naturally, I could not leave without tasting a filter coffee prepared under the expertise of a World Brewers Champion. Following Martin’s suggestion, I chose an El Salvador that featured notes of blueberry, vanilla, and apple pie.
He brewed it for me, and I shared it with my wife, further enhancing the memorability of our visit.
Retail Offering
I spent some time exploring their retail coffee selection and was impressed by the variety available, and like Square Mile coffee in London, they also offer 350g bags.
There were espresso blends, single origins, and numerous options for filter brewing, along with pastries for those desiring something sweet with their coffee. Naturally, I couldn’t resist purchasing a bag to take home, which I asked them to grind for AeroPress brewing during my stay in Vienna.
I ended up returning another day with a friend, and the café was packed, which is always a positive sign; this time, I decided to try their long black.
On my last visit, I knew I had to bring back some coffee to Dubai. Confused about which one to choose, the barista kindly brewed me their house blend as an espresso, which I enjoyed, so that’s what I took home.
But I wasn’t finished yet, as I was particularly intrigued by their filter bags, which offered a fun and convenient way to brew good coffee without hassle, especially during travel or flights. For around €10.5, you receive 10 bags, which I thought was excellent value, especially for something so practical and well-planned.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this is likely my favorite coffee shop in Vienna at present. Why? Because I appreciated the meticulous attention to detail, the diverse coffee offerings, the warmth of the space, and, most importantly, Martin’s generous hospitality.
He was friendly, eager to share insights, and clearly passionate about his craft. Yes, I can envision it getting quite busy, and justly so, but it’s precisely the kind of place that makes a coffee experience memorable. If you’re looking for something sweet with your coffee, you can select from a range of pastries as well.
Therefore, if you find yourself in Vienna and have any interest in exceptional specialty coffee, I highly recommend adding this café to your itinerary.
