The Most Significant Non-Tangible Praises Individuals Have Received

Has an especially memorable compliment ever been given to you? Some years back, Joanna told me I was “really adept at getting presents” after I raved over a bottle of elegant rinse-free hand wash she gifted me before a journey. That hand wash was indeed fantastic, yet what truly resonated with me was the compliment. Being skilled at receiving gifts? That’s a delightful trait to possess. It’s the sort of thing people frequently observe but seldom mention — let alone praise.

Usually, compliments are saved for the visible: Nice haircut! Great outfit! You look so pretty! There’s no issue with that, but I do concentrate on giving compliments that aren’t appearance-based. I do it partly because it reflects my beliefs about body diversity and beauty norms. But also because non-physical compliments have a distinct impact and tend to linger in a way that even the most flattering haircut compliment doesn’t. It demands more thought to praise something you can’t notice immediately, and I believe our minds recognize that effort. It renders the comment more impactful — makes us feel “seen,” ironically.

I don’t mind a compliment on my hair (thank you for noticing my bob; I was really anxious about it). But my heart expands like the Grinch’s when recalling instances someone has observed, for instance, that I’m good with animals or at making young children feel at ease. And years on, I still enjoy considering myself as someone skilled at receiving gifts. It’s a modest thing, but a valuable thing, and something I’d never have realized about myself if someone hadn’t pointed it out. So when I perceive a trait like that in others, I aim to do likewise.

What about you? Are there any non-physical compliments that have remained with you over time? I adore inquiring this because the replies often astound me!

P.S. A tip for engaging with strangers, and what do you appreciate about yourself?
