Initial Impressions
I finally arrived at Farha, London. I had long been aware of Farha, which translates to joy in Arabic, as I followed their journey leading up to their launch at the end of last year. So, when the chance to revisit London came this summer, I was eagerly anticipating it while fervently hoping the lines wouldn’t be excessively long.
Why? Well, the photos I had encountered on Instagram showcased wait times of 40 to 45 minutes and sometimes even an hour. Curious? Read further.
To start, Farha has successfully established its reputation through not only excellent coffee but also their scrumptious, alluring, and beautifully crafted pastries sure to tantalize your taste buds. I visited on Father’s Day in London with my daughter, and after having met the owner, Umar, prior to the opening, it was great to finally see him in his establishment.
The store itself features exquisite design elements, evoking my favorite saying, “the beverage of the wanderer.” Upon entering Farha, you’d almost believe you were transported to North Africa, with some design inspirations drawn from Morocco. It genuinely takes you away.
Baked Goods
As you step in, a tempting selection of pastries awaits you. Which one to choose?
I was already set on my choice, having followed them on Instagram for several months, so when it was time to select, I certainly wanted their renowned banana brûlée praline.
Also available was their mango cheesecake pastry, which I simply could not resist.
And since it was still morning, we opted to try their celebrated egg shakshuka pastry roll as well, grabbing two of those.
We settled down in the back, which was perfect because we had ample space to absorb the ambiance and admire the various elements of this beautifully adorned coffee shop. After finishing the shakshuka egg roll, Umar came over to chat with us and ask if we desired anything further.
How could I say no? He brought us another pastry to sample, the pear saffron one, which we couldn’t finish due to our fullness, so we decided to take it home.
Everything in the shop, especially the pastries, is crafted with artistic flair by their skilled pastry chefs. Naturally, I felt compelled to snap some photos using one of the studio options on my iPhone (see above). Coffee blogger tendencies, I suppose.
The Brew
I began with a cortado using their house blend… subtle notes of milk chocolate.
After our savory and sweet pastry course, I concluded with a filter coffee made from a Kenyan bean. I have a special fondness for Kenyan naturals, and this one did not let me down.
I complemented that with my favorite pastry, the banana brûlée praline (how many times will I mention this? Sigh) BUT Delicious!
Before we departed, Umar generously offered us additional drinks. I caved and opted for an iced coffee, given the warm London day, about 28C. My daughter selected one of their special cold iced teas. We wandered about a bit, captured a few more pictures, and then chose to move on to our next Father’s Day destination.
Growth Aspirations
While we were seated at the back, Umar showed us the area where all the pastries are prepared for the day, then shared some of their plans for expansion.
Thus far, several high-end coffee establishments have reportedly been paying them visits. I won’t disclose names here for privacy, but news has definitely spread around London that the pastries at this coffee shop are fantastic. Tourists are even making the 30-minute trek from West London to stop by, purchase a few pastries, and then head back.
In the future, Umar and his team intend to start providing breakfast and brunch, and possibly light lunch options as well. They’re also looking to enhance the specialty coffee side of things, so a dedicated brew bar might be on the horizon. Now that would be thrilling.
Closing Thoughts
Overall, despite Farha being situated in Leytonstone, it isn’t far if you’re already in the West End. It’s about a 15-minute trip from Oxford Circus and roughly a five-minute stroll from the station. And believe me, you won’t regret it.
Finding exceptional pastries alongside quality coffee in one place isn’t easy, but credit to Farha for making it a reality.
You will find yourself in a different realm, where your taste buds will appreciate not just the coffee but certainly the artistically delightful and scrumptious pastries as well. I’m already excited about my next visit, and I continue to wish Farha, Umar, and his team all the success in their upcoming endeavors, God willing.
Locate them here Farha, 42 High Road Leyton, London E15 2BP and note that they are only open from Wednesday to Sundays.
